Cognitive Snapshot

Measure it, or keep guessing at it.

Three short tests, run back to back. Each one looks at a different part of how your mind holds up under load. About three minutes in total.

Working memory

Each test starts with a quick explanation, then a short countdown before it begins. About three minutes in total.

Somewhere quiet, notifications off, phone on Do Not Disturb. Your score is only as honest as your attention.

This is a self-assessment built for curiosity and self-tracking. It is not a diagnostic test and it does not detect or rule out any medical condition. If you are concerned about your memory, speak to a doctor.

Test 1 of 3 · Speed Grid

Find the numbers in order.

Twenty-five numbers, scattered across a grid. Tap them in order, one to twenty-five, as fast as you can.

  • 1Move your eyes, not your finger. Hunting with your fingertip is slower than searching with your gaze.
  • 2Nothing on screen will tell you which number you are on during the real thing. Keeping the count is part of the test.
  • 3A wrong tap is counted but does not stop you. Keep going.

Tap 1, then 2, then 3, and so on. This example is three by three — the real grid is five by five, twenty-five numbers.

Test 2 of 3 · Number Recall

Hold the number, then give it back.

Digits appear one at a time, then disappear. When they stop, type them back in the order you saw them.

  • 1Nothing is timed here. Take as long as you need to answer.
  • 2The sequences get longer until you miss two at the same length. Everyone stops somewhere — that stopping point is the measurement.
  • 3Do not write anything down, and do not say them out loud to someone else.
The idea
SeesTypes
4You see a 4. It disappears.
9Then a 9. It disappears.
2Then a 2. The sequence ends.
492You type 492.

Test 3 of 3 · Running Sums

Add each number to the one before it.

Single digits appear one at a time, at a steady pace. Each time a new one arrives, add it to the number that came immediately before, and type the answer.

  • 1Add the new number to the previous number — not to your running total.
  • 2The pace does not wait for you. If you miss one, drop it and catch the next.
  • 3Answers submit themselves. Just type the number.
Worked example
SeesTypes
3First number. Nothing to add yet.
583 + 5
275 + 2 — not 8 + 2
682 + 6

This is the part people get wrong. You are always adding the last two numbers you saw. Your previous answer never comes back into it.

Worth knowing about this run.

No pass mark. No percentile. One sitting tells you very little on its own — the number worth having is the one you measure it against, which is why we hold this and bring it back to you in seven days.

We will email this card and a reminder in seven days, plus the occasional piece of research. Leave any time.

Now go beat someone.

Send it to the person who always says their memory is better than yours. This is the card that settles it.

Why we measure

Most of what we call ageing is cellular.

The foggy mornings. The slower recoveries. The word that will not come. These are measurable shifts — and what can be measured can be supported.
